Success stories & Our HSC/IB results!

Our HSC & IB results for the class of 2021!

We’ve tutored a wide range of students with an even greater variety of needs. These are the stories from some of the students we've helped:

Zach [yr 11]
When I first started tutoring Zach, he was having trouble grasping key economic concepts (economics is THE hardest subject ever). Over the course of our lessons, we practised drawing and interpreting graphs, short answer question and general discussion about economic theory. He then began to understand the way economic concepts overlap and how the theory can be applied to real-life economic scenario’s. I could clearly see his confidence growing with each session and his understanding of this difficult subject became more concrete. Now, Zach and I are able to have discussions and debates surrounding the real-world economic events, their impacts, and include our own informed opinions about what is being done to combat such issues. I commend Zach on this awesome progress throughout the term, it’s great to see his knowledge grow and his improvement is extremely apparent!!

Bella [yr 9]
Throughout my journey working with children at IB Successful, I have noticed significant improvement and development in my students. When working with Bella, I noticed her attitude towards mathematics, a subject she initially disliked, begin transform, and alongside this so did her academic ability. Hand-in-hand, her confidence also began to skyrocket, and this was a window of opportunity for her to achieve her goals, in which she conquered. Struggling to pass her mathematics exams, Bella’s confidence was low but now through her own endeavor to improve and the support she needs, she is flourishing in all areas of her schooling.

Luke [yr 11]
“Your struggles do not define you but they shape the person you become when you face them and overcome them”

I met Ethan when he was going into year eight. He was a shy yet lovely young boy who enjoyed school but struggled immensely with complex concepts, especially in Mathematics. After a plethora of teachers who just did not explain the maths in a way that he understood, his mum approached me to work with him. After our first meeting, I had the chance to sit and chat with both Ethan and his parents and go through his reports, which gave me a rough guide as to what we needed to work with. I could see that Ethan suffered from quite low confidence and this was largely due to his lack of understanding within Maths and other subjects. Not only was Ethan struggling daily with his school work, he also had Tourettes which made me admire his exceptional efforts even more.

Immediately Ethan and I warmed to one another and he showed me that he was willing to put in the hard work and effort necessary in order to succeed. One of our goals was not only to slightly increase his marks in maths but I unbeknownst to him wanted to enhance his confidence also. Ethan had so much to give and was a very intelligent, witty and fun student to work with. In each of our sessions I would clearly and concisely explain to him the foundations of the topic in maths he was learning and then supplement this with some example questions we complete together and then some additional homework from our IB Successful resource book. Most students take a year or so to show significant improvement. However, Ethan quickly improved his marks term after term of year eight and moved rapidly from a grade D to a C and then a B. Most recently he completed a math test and receive an incredible 100%!!

Ethan has transformed dramatically, he is confident and has the ability to apply himself to whatever Math question I throw at him. We also work on other subjects too, however his improvement in Maths has been something I had only seen on a handful of times. Ethan’s strong work ethic and dedication to his studies together with his newfound confidence and attitude (which has to be encouraged sometimes by me!) is a testament to his commitment to continuously develop. I am so thrilled to be on this amazing journey with Ethan and am so excited to see what exceptional things he will achieve. He always makes me have a huge smile and laugh in every single session we have, but his engagement and questions always show to me just how much he cares! The bond I have with Ethan is fantastic and I am so privileged to have the honour to mentor and guide Ethan. His ability to retain his confidence despite the struggles of Tourettes that he faces, makes me constantly admire him! He is a success story in his own right, and will only grow to be more successful in time! Well done Ethan!

Grace [yr 12]
I began tutoring Grace in her first term of year twelve, which was quite an overwhelming time for her! She was a dedicated student who just was not grasping the content being taught in her Advanced English class. Because it was her final year and not much was changing in her marks, she decided she needed some extra support, hence why I began working with her. Grace was lost and felt very defeated, which was not ideal. Although her marks were decent, sitting around the 60%-70% mark in her Advanced English class, I could quickly see that Grace had great potential which she could apply in the subject. I began teaching her foundational knowledge including language techniques, basic thesis and essay structure and gave her an essay a week to write and submit to me. As soon as I clearly explained to her these basic structures, everything else happened quite quickly!

Within a few months, Grace’s knowledge of English had greatly increased and her writing abilities were far superior to when she first started working with me. In her trial exams, her English mark was 85% which I knew we could secure her 95 in her final HSC exam. After many strategies and Grace’s amazing application to her studies, at some points she was As we approached the HSC exams Grace’s anxiety overtook her and a streak of bad luck meant she had a lot to deal with emotionally. I increased my support, I was available on message to her constantly, I was there for anything she needed and Grace showed her strength in moving through a difficult time. I knew that Grace was going to achieve amazing things in her HSC, little did she know. After working with Grace for a year, she transformed into a confident young lady who could apply her knowledge and effectively articulate her words. Her HSC mark in Advanced English was 99 and this provided her with an overall ATAR of 99.5. Grace’s hard work and sheer dedication to her studies was a representation of successful teamwork!

Luke [yr 11]
When Luke first attended tutoring sessions, he appeared to have a lack of interest in studies, and struggled in English, particularly in essay writing. Through our sessions, he has learnt to undergo study habits that aid in his improvement and has also achieved significantly higher marks in English; advancing from a failing English grade, to high B’s and even a few A’s in his assignments and exams. This was achieved through teaching Luke in a way that was personalised to him, enforcing and embedding the basic fundamentals of English writing into his learning which led to a natural inclination to use more sophisticated language and write with clarity and precision. These skills have travelled with him and supported him in all other essay-based tasks and allow him to think more critically.

Bruno [yr 8]
Over the previous 12 months, Bruno has been able to improve significantly in english. Bruno began with below average results and struggling within the classroom environment to grasp basic foundations. Through setting weekly short term goals and longer term objectives, the student has been able to move up several classes and academic grades. Bruno is now able to brainstorm ideas, develop appropriate essay structures, use correct grammar and spelling and proofread his own writing. Bruno has recently even been able to write his own short story which received a perfect score for his school assessment. Although once really struggling with english and finding it mundane, he now actually enjoys writing and thrives within his current english class .
